Buying Tips
The following advice can help you avoid problems before and after buying a new property.
- Choose your own notary. It’s your prerogative as a buyer, and after all you’re paying the bill.
- Three or four weeks ahead of time, make a list of the companies and institutions you have to advise regarding your change of address: telephone, cable, banks, accountant, notary, lawyer, Hydro Quebec, Revenue Canada, Revenu Québec, lending institutions, etc.
- Insure your new property fully and promptly, whether you will be living there immediately or not.
- Ask your insurer about including in your policy a clause protecting you against hidden defects.
- Have the home you want to buy inspected. Don’t skip this important step. Make sure your promise to purchase is conditional on the inspection results.
